Taking a pause on puppies

Yesterday, we posted a final slideshow related to the semi-recent Walk, Wag, and Run hoe-down, and in it, I made a tongue-in-cheek kind of inside joke with the caption for this photograph. One co-worker called the joke "obtuse," sending me to the dictionary, and another called it distasteful, sending me into six more months of therapy.

Really, Steve does not kick puppies. In fact, he has a dog, Samina, a cute little thing, and a cat, named Tweety, whom I've never seen because she's a cat, and if cats don't want you to see them, you will not see them.

Anyway, after we published the Walk, Wag, and Run thing, which followed a photo show of pets dressed in Halloween costumes, which followed a piece on Dee's Doggie Den turning 10, which followed 4.27 million lost-pet briefs, Steve said we need to tone it down on pet-related stuff because readers think we're some sort of subsidiary of the Pets R Us or something.

Although I am a hardcore pet advocate — can I say that? — I have to agree after looking at our home page first thing this morning. There are dogs everywhere. It looked like I'm channeling Larry Powell, who's a really nice guy, I understand, and a champion of pet rescue and adoptions.

Soooo, Steve declared a moratorium on news stories and features related to businesses that cater to pets, organizations that stage fundraisers to finance their pet rescue efforts, and most all things about dogs and cats for, like, six months … or two weeks … or 12 hours, or something … I wasn't really listening.

P.S. That doesn't apply to lost-and-found notices. We'll still do those, but in a lower-profile kind of way.

Now, who's a good reader? You are. Yes you are. You're a good reader.End of story

So it's up to me to inform your readers about Drink 4 the Dogs on Saturday from 5-10pm at TopGolf to benefit the SPCA of Texas. Yes, that's DRINKING free beer to benefit homeless pets. And you can also play golf if you like. More info at http://www.drink4thedogs.com.

Oh, and here is the neighborhood tie-in: The owner of Big D Sports & Entertainment - which is sponsoring this shindig - is a Lakewood resident.

nicely done, LakewooodTX. bravo. you figured out the loophole. now, let's hope others take the hint. i might just do a running daily blog post with a headline like "Pet moratorium: day 2" for anyone else who might want to "comment."

I think the pet blog would be great. I feel like I am "connected" to the animal world but I have learned about several animal activities from Lakewood-now that I have attended. Please do something. Thank you for keeping the lost and found segment. For those of us that work hard on getting these animals home we need all the help we can get!! ~maeleska, coordinator of LFH Animal Alert~

Actually, a pet blog is a great idea. Thanks, Bruce and maeleska. Let's figure out how we can do that....

I think I suggested that a few months ago...a pet section on the main screen to collect all the lost animal notices, rescue-related fundraisers, and cute animal pictures (pet of the week anyone?). That way, all the animal notices (which I love!) wouldn't clutter up the Lakewood shorts section - some weeks things move slowly down the page, but if there are a lot of animal notices, things can move pretty quickly "off the screen" and it's easy to miss other neighborhood goings-on.

Also, I wrote for my (national-award-winning, Woodrow-Wilson-rival) high school's newspaper, so if you ever need contributions (especially about pets!), I may still have some journalistic skills buried somewhere....
