Hankinson Honored at Library

The Children's Area in the Lakewood Branch Library was officially named the "Linda Phillips Hankinson Children's Area" Oct. 12 during a reception organized by the Lakewood Library Friends to honor her memory.

Hankinson was a founding member of the Lakewood Library Friends and a LLF board president. In addition to her multiple volunteer activities, she served as chairman of the Dallas Public Library Municipal Board and president of the Swiss Avenue Historic District Association.

Hankinson's neighbors from Swiss Avenue and Bryan Parkway made a generous donation to the LLF in her name at the time of her death in 2006. The LLF matched the donation and used the funds to purchase books for the children's collection at the Lakewood Branch Library.

The naming of a Dallas Public Library area is reserved for the recognition of people who have contributed significantly to the development of library services. The LLF board submitted to the Municipal Library Board a proposal to recognize Hankinson by dedicating the Lakewood Library's Children's Area in her name. It passed by unanimous approval.

Professionally, Hankinson's last position was head librarian and director of libraries at The Hockaday School from 1988-2006.End of story
