The Dallas City Plan Commission hears the next round of discussions on the 99-year special use permit of the Far West club at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at City Hall.
The hearing comes about primarily because of efforts by the Lakewood, Gastonwood-Coronado Hills, and Hollywood-Santa Monica neighborhood associations. Neighborhood leaders and residents question the term of the permit because it allows a dance hall to operate for nearly a century within a residential area.
Most clubs in Dallas that operate dance halls receive two- to five-year special use permits, which are reviewed by the city at the end of each term. The permit used by Far West represents one of only two 99-year terms in the city — the other issued in the 1960s to an establishment in an industrial area near Mockingbird Lane and Harry Hines Boulevard.
Community leaders such as LNA President Henda Salmeron, G-CHNA President Scott Clumpner, and H-SMNA President Peter Doncaster want to see the Far West permit reviewed more frequently by the city.
