Remove Trash, Plant Vegetables, Feel Better

July 12 marks the second Saturday of the month, and that means the For the Love of the Lake Second Saturday Spruce-up takes place that morning.

Volunteers meet at the FTLOTL office at Casa Linda Plaza between 8-9 a.m., break fast with breakfast fare such as juice, chocolate milk, bottled water, coffee — gotta have coffee — and munchies before trekking the White Rock Lake shores and surrounding areas to clean up after the litter pigs who don't clean up after themselves.

July 21 brings an opportunity for people interested in gardening to learn the basics of planting vegetables and sustaining their own produce.

Don Lambert, executive director of the nonprofit Gardeners in Community Development will deliver an address titled "Sustaining Neighborhoods through Community Gardening." The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the FTLOTL office.

Rebecca Smith, education assistant of Gardeners in Community Development, will also participate in the program. She coordinates the community garden at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Pleasant Grove, a garden that has produced 18,000 pounds of produce for food pantries since it was first planted five years ago.End of story
